Information Management is enterprise wide and department agnostic. Organisations must prepare a holistic approach for the sake of agility, security and maximum return on investment. William Knight reveals trends for the coming years.

Richard Hall, Group IT Manager for CODA financial consultancy, is pleased with his implementation of Lifecycle Management for policy control of email. Rather than just throwing more storage on clients and desktops, he now has a centralised solution able to exploit business-critical information and retrieve it quickly for legislative purposes such as the Freedom of Information Act.

Hall says that before the project, a single search for an important email took two people nearly four days involving restoration of dozens of backup tapes and slow manual searches. Now, he says, "The same thing can be done in sub-five seconds. Just one similar request, and the solution pays for itself."

Never the less, "The process of finding the right vendor was painful," he adds, blaming misinformation and half-complete solutions that solved either storage, or quick retrieval but were not clearly tamper proof.
